Is CBD Oil Good For Dogs? The Real Truth
CBD (Cannabidiol) is chemical component of hemp and marijuana (cannabis), but unlike THC has no psychoactive activity. CBD has numerous benefits for your canine companion but as with any supplement there are potential risks so read on to learn more.
Benefits of CBD Oil for Dogs
It is believed that CBD oil can help dogs with many different ailments including:
- Skin conditions
- Appetite loss
Even though these are anecdotal claims based on testimonials from those who have given CBD oil products to dogs, there is a growing amount of information with many vets stating that they have seen improvements with low level pain tolerance from conditions such as arthritis and improvements with anxiety and even a reduction in severity and number of seizures.
More research is being conducted with positive preliminary results. A few examples are listed below.
Colorado State University is currently conducting research on the effects of CBD on dogs with epilepsy. In the article Preliminary data from CBD clinical trials ‘promising’ Mary Guiden writes
SkeptVet’s arcticle Evidence Update: Promising Clinical Trial of CBD for Arthritis Treatment in Dogs summarizes a study that was conducted at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine.
Frontiers In Veterinary Science’s article Pharmacokinetics, Safety, and Clinical Efficacy of Cannabidiol Treatment in Osteoarthritic Dogs summarizes a study designed to assess safety and analgesic efficacy of CBD oil in dogs with osteoarthritis.
As more research continues to be conducted we will have more scientific proof that CBD is beneficial to dogs in many ways.
Side Effects of CBD
There are some potential side effects of CBD oil. According to Harvard Health Publishing of Harvard Medical School “Side effects of CBD include nausea, fatigue and irritability. CBD can increase the level in your blood of the blood thinner coumadin, and it can raise levels of certain other medications in your blood by the exact same mechanism that grapefruit juice does. It is always best to discuss with your dog’s vet before giving your dog CBD oil and always be watchful for any side effects, especially if your dog is currently taking any medications.
Potency and Purity of CBD is Very Important
Be sure the CBD oil you purchase has verifiable 3rd party testing for potency and impurities such as heavy metals and pesticides. Sellers should be able to provide documentation or have documentation located on their websites. At ChewdUp we only source organic CBD oil that is THC free and 3rd party tested and verified for purity and potency. FDA had found that over 30% of CBD oil currently on the market doesn’t contain any CBD oil at all and some had lower or higher potency, both potentially dangerous. In addition, many CBD oils currently on the market contain dangerous and harmful impurities such as heavy metals and solvents used in the extraction process to make the product. Our CBD oil is created with patented CO2 extraction process that does not use harmful chemicals and therefore introduces no solvents into the product.
ChewdUp’s CBD products are:
- Broad Spectrum Profile - contains phytocannabinoids, sterols, flavonoids, terpenes, vitamins and minerals
- THC Free (0.0%) - 0.0% tetrahydrocannabinol, the compound that gives the psychoactive effects or "high"
- Preservative free - no preservatives are used in our CBD Oil Tinctures or other CBD Oil products
- Solvent free - some companies use solvents to isolate or extract chemicals from the plan. The CBD Oil that is used in our products is produced by using CO2 extraction, which is clean and requires no solvents
- Meets regulatory requirements for heavy metals and pesticides
- 100% USA Organically Compliant Hemp
- Phytocannabinoid-Rich (PCR) Broad Spectrum hemp oil
Dosage of CBD for Dogs
As no proper scientific research has been conducted concerning the dosage needed to obtain proper results while minimizing the potential for side effect, dog owners should speak to their vet prior to giving their furry family member CBD oil or CBD oil containing products. Generally, 0.2mg CBD / pound (dog’s weight) is a good starting dosage. It is important to start with a lower dose such as this and gradually increase as necessary as all dogs will react differently to CBD oil products.
Laws regarding CBD Oil
Laws vary from region to region so it is important to find out if purchasing CBD oil is legal in your area. Also, as some CBD oil is derived from marijuana and some is derived from hemp there could be different laws concerning the different types. As noted above all ChewdUp CBD oil is hemp sourced, 0.0% THC and is 3rd party tested and verified. CBD Awareness Project 2019 CBD Laws by State has a lot of great information.
